QuickBooks Bank Import Size Limit (350 KB): How to Split Large Files

QuickBooks Online limits CSV bank imports to about 350 KB, roughly 1,000 to 1,500 transactions. If your file is too large, split it by date range and import each part separately, or use a QBO file, which has no size limit.

QuickBooks Online restricts bank-transaction file uploads to about 350 KB, which works out to roughly 1,000 to 1,500 transactions per CSV. High-volume accounts and full-year imports blow past that, and the upload fails. There are two clean ways around it.

Option 1: split the file by date range

  1. Open your CSV in Excel or Google Sheets.
  2. Sort by date, then split the rows into smaller files, for example one per month or quarter.
  3. Keep each file under about 350 KB. Well under 1,000 rows is a safe target.
  4. Import each file separately under Transactions, Bank transactions, Upload from file, choosing the same account each time.
  5. Use non-overlapping date ranges so you do not create duplicates.

Option 2: use a QBO file (no size limit)

QBO files have no practical size cap, so a full year imports in a single upload, and they skip column mapping and de-duplicate automatically. If you are starting from a PDF, convert it straight to QBO instead of wrestling with CSV splits.

Avoiding duplicates when splitting

The most common mistake is overlapping date ranges across split files, which imports the same transaction twice. Always make each file's start date the day after the previous file's end date, and review the QuickBooks bank feed before accepting the batch.

FAQ

What is the file size limit for importing transactions into QuickBooks Online?

About 350 KB per file, which is roughly 1,000 to 1,500 transactions for a CSV. Files above that must be split, or converted to QBO, which has no size limit.

How do I import more than 1,000 transactions into QuickBooks?

Either split the CSV into smaller files by non-overlapping date range and import each one, or use a QBO file, which lets you import a full year at once.

Why does a QBO file avoid the size limit?

The 350 KB cap applies to CSV uploads. QBO (Web Connect) files use QuickBooks' native banking import, which has no practical size limit.
